Free tax programs seek volunteers across states
Free tax-preparation programs are recruiting volunteers for the upcoming filing season as demand outpaces available help. Michigan Treasurer Rachael Eubanks urged residents to join VITA, Tax Counseling for the Elderly or AARP Foundation Tax-Aide, which help eligible households file returns and claim credits; Michigan programs served more than 90,000 households during the 2026 season. United Way of Lebanon County is seeking volunteers for roles including tax preparers, interpreters and greeters, while Hedberg Public Library in Janesville is recruiting volunteers for its VITA site and will provide required training. AARP Tax-Aide is also seeking volunteers in Ohio’s Washington County, where the program says shortages have forced it to turn away seniors needing free tax assistance.
