In Maine, Maddie Marks went into labor during a Sept. 11, 2002, memorial service and delivered her son on the roadside with help from firefighter and EMT Robert Shay Jr. Marks and Shay reunited in September 2026 after nearly 25 years, and her son was named partly in honor of Shay. The stories describe how new life became permanently intertwined with memories of national tragedy, fear and loss.
