German Machine Orders Rise 14% in September
German manufacturing data point to a tentative recovery, with overall factory orders rising 4.4% in September after a steep August decline, slightly below forecasts. More sharply, orders for machinery and plant engineering were up 14% from a year earlier, though the industry association cautioned that the comparison was boosted by an unusually weak September 2025; orders were 5% higher over the first nine months of 2026. Domestic machinery orders rose faster than foreign orders, but analysts and industry leaders warned that the improvement remains fragile and uneven rather than evidence of a broad-based rebound. Earlier second-quarter figures also showed German machine-tool orders increasing 12% year over year, while production and exports were still declining, with demand varying widely across customer industries. The stronger order flow may signal a cyclical bottom and eventual improvement in production, but the recovery has not yet translated into a sustained, economy-wide upswing.
