Guardian Cap Use Grows Amid NFL Safety Debate

About 20 to 25 NFL players have worn Guardian Caps during games this season, seeking extra protection from head impacts. The NFL says laboratory tests show the padded helmet covers reduce forces transmitted through helmets, and a 2025 study linked their required use in contact practices to fewer concussions, though researchers cautioned the decline could not be attributed to the caps alone. Chris Nowinski of the Concussion & CTE Foundation says the benefits are being overstated: the caps have not been shown to prevent concussions or reduce CTE risk, and he warns they could give players a false sense of security. The debate comes amid continuing concern about the long-term effects of head trauma, including CTE diagnoses in more than 100 former NFL players.
