Harris Plans Michigan Senate Event With El-Sayed

Kamala Harris will join Democratic Michigan Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed on Tuesday at a roundtable on Black maternal health and maternal-infant mortality disparities. El-Sayed, a physician and former head of Detroit and Wayne County health departments, is running against Republican Mike Rogers for the seat held by retiring Democratic Sen. Gary Peters. Harris endorsed him in August. Spokesperson Eduardo Negrón said she looks forward to returning to Michigan to help turn out the vote and that flipping the Senate is critical to bring down prices and stand up to Donald Trump’s corruption. El-Sayed said he is grateful she is coming to talk about turnout and that people look up to her as an inspirational leader. His campaign said he looks forward to hearing directly from Black women and healthcare providers on making healthcare more affordable. CONTESTED: Rogers declined a Fox 2 Detroit debate hosted by Roop Raj one week prior and accused Raj of bias; Raj denied the claim. El-Sayed spoke next to an empty podium during the hour-long debate. Harris narrowly lost Michigan to Trump in 2024. In a fly-fishing interview with Jake Tapper, Gavin Newsom said he knows her base of supporters and friends and would not pursue a 2028 run against that crossover.
