CDC Declares Largest Recorded Cyclospora Outbreak Over

U.S. health officials have declared the nation’s largest recorded cyclosporiasis outbreak over, saying contaminated shredded iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms de Mexico is no longer a risk because recalled products have been removed from the market. The outbreak sickened nearly 13,000 people across 21 states, contributed to an unprecedented nationwide surge in cases, hospitalized hundreds, and was associated with two deaths. Taylor Farms and restaurant chains including Taco Bell removed the lettuce, while the outbreak temporarily disrupted restaurant traffic and food-service operations. The FDA will continue investigating how the parasite contaminated the lettuce and several other cyclosporiasis clusters that remain unresolved.
