Health Canada suspends Winnipeg Grifols plasma clinic

Health Canada has suspended plasma collection at Grifols’ Taylor Avenue clinic in Winnipeg, saying the site failed to implement required corrective actions and demonstrate an effective quality-management system. The facility is where 22-year-old Rodiyat Alabede died after donating plasma in October 2025; another donor died after donating at a separate Winnipeg clinic, though Health Canada previously said it found no link between either death and the collection process. Grifols had already paused collection at its Canadian centres in August. Alabede’s family’s advocate and public-sector unions say suspending one clinic is insufficient, calling for broader action against Grifols and independent scrutiny of the company and federal oversight; NUPGE also opposes paid plasma collection and supports expanding voluntary donations.
