Hollywood films recast tech titans as villains
A wave of films about Silicon Valley leaders reflects a shift from portraying tech founders as visionary upstarts to scrutinizing them as powerful, potentially harmful figures, amid public disillusionment and some leaders’ alignment with President Donald Trump. Alex Gibney’s documentary “Musk” examines Elon Musk’s career and political alliance, while Aaron Sorkin’s “The Social Reckoning” centers on Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen and allegations that the platform’s algorithms amplified hate speech. Other releases include “You Can See Everything,” about Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes, and “Artificial,” which dramatizes OpenAI chief Sam Altman; a separate analysis says “The Social Reckoning” and “Artificial” reinforce the new casting of technology executives as corporate villains.
