Hugh Jackman Serves as Honorary Captain for Michigan Wolverines
Hugh Jackman served as honorary captain for Michigan’s rivalry game against Michigan State, joining the Wolverines at Michigan Stadium and encouraging the team before kickoff. Wearing a No. 48 jersey, he explained that it honored Gerald Ford, who played for Michigan and objected when his Black friend and teammate Willis Ward was benched for a 1936 game against Georgia Tech because of the visiting team’s racism. Jackman attended with Sutton Foster, and Michigan promoted his appearance as part of the buildup to the Battle for the Paul Bunyan Trophy.
