Indianapolis Archdiocese Suspends Mass Obligation Amid ICE Fears

The Archdiocese of Indianapolis has temporarily excused Catholics who reasonably fear detention, family separation or intimidation from attending Sunday and holy-day Masses amid increased Immigration and Customs Enforcement activity in the area. Archbishop Charles C. Thompson’s decree took effect September 4 and remains in place through September 30, applying even to people with legal immigration status. Catholic pastors said the unusual measure reflects widespread anxiety among immigrant communities, while encouraging those who stay home to pray with Scripture, say the rosary or watch a livestreamed Mass. Priests were also urged to provide pastoral care, including Communion for homebound parishioners and access to other sacraments.
