Italy Extends Border Controls on Travel From Spain for 15 Days

Italy has extended for another 15 days its temporary border controls on air and maritime travel from Spain, continuing its suspension of Schengen free movement with the country. Rome says the measure remains necessary because of significant internal-security risks and a potential threat of terrorist infiltration after the mass arrival of migrants in Spain’s Ceuta enclave. The controls, which are conducted randomly at ports and airports, were first introduced in late July and represent a second extension of the exceptional measure. Italian authorities said more than 180,000 travelers had been checked by the end of August, with 31 denied entry and six detained.
