Myanmar sets April 2027 by-elections across 55 constituencies

Myanmar’s election commission says by-elections will be held April 4, 2027, in 55 constituencies, including parliamentary seats left vacant by lawmakers’ government appointments and areas excluded from the recent general election because of conflict. Some contests will take place in territory recently recaptured by the military, while fighting continues in other designated areas. The vote is not expected to change the military-backed Union Solidarity and Development Party’s dominance of parliament, but could offer a limited gauge of support for participating parties. The elections follow a general election criticized by opponents and international observers as entrenching military rule, amid a civil war that began after the 2021 coup.
