North England revisits military stories for Remembrance
Recent remembrance activities and stories are highlighting military service across generations. Durham School marked the centenary of its chapel, a First World War memorial, with the premiere of composer Will Todd’s setting of Noel Hodgson’s poem “Before Action,” performed by pupils and alumni. In Sunderland, accounts recall firefighter Thomas Bruce’s rescue efforts during an air raid and his later public service, as the city prepared for its Remembrance parade. Other stories trace a Lancaster soldier’s fatal wounds in the First World War and a family’s Second World War experiences, while a Carlisle museum talk will explore how a Victorian-era family photo album revealed one ancestor’s Army service. Together, the events and histories show how remembrance is sustained through ceremonies, archives and family accounts.
