Northern Star rebuffs reported Gold Fields takeover bid
Gold Fields approached Northern Star about a potential transaction. Northern Star rejected the approach. Gold Fields is weighing its next steps. Northern Star is valued at about A$31.5 billion. Gold Fields has a market capitalization of roughly $35.7 billion. Northern Star shares are down 17% this year in Sydney trading. Gold Fields shares are down about 9% over the same period. Northern Star appointed a new CEO in July amid Elliott Investment Management pressure. Elliott has pushed for a sale, asset divestments, and board changes. In June Chairman Michael Chaney told shareholders the company had received several approaches over the past year but timing was not right to sell. Northern Star has repeatedly cut production guidance, citing bottlenecks at its Kalgoorlie processing plant, and recently guided to 1.5 million to 1.65 million ounces. Gold Fields expects to hit the upper end of its 2.4 to 2.6 million oz 2026 guidance, aided by Chile's Salares Norte mine, after acquiring Gold Road Resources and Osisko Mining over the past two years. Gold Fields' next steps after the rebuff remain unresolved.
