Pennsylvania Measles Outbreak Kills Infant, Spans 37 Counties

A Pennsylvania coroner said measles caused the death of 6-week-old Mary Stoltzfus, who had Amish lethal microcephaly and was especially vulnerable to infection. A second infant, Ivan Miller, tested positive for measles but died from a ruptured spleen; the coroner said measles did not cause or contribute to that injury, though it was listed as a significant condition on his death certificate. Neither infant was old enough to receive the routine first MMR dose, typically given around 12 to 15 months. The outbreak has sickened 676 people across 37 Pennsylvania counties, hospitalized 124, and included four cases among people fully vaccinated for their age. State health officials continue to emphasize that two MMR doses provide about 97% protection, while the CDC has not said whether it will classify either infant death as measles-associated.
