Police-Protester Clashes Reported Across Four Countries

Protests against Albania’s government in Tirana have repeatedly turned violent since mid-October, beginning with demonstrations over a development tied to the family of U.S. President Donald Trump. At a large rally, protesters threw stones at police and water cannons, while officers responded with rubber bullets and tear gas; clashes left the area around Rinia Park and the main boulevard covered in smoke. Authorities said more than 300 protesters and police had been injured and dozens of demonstrators detained, while government buildings were attacked. The protests have broadened into demands over the rule of law, education and young people’s prospects in Albania, drawing support from students, academics, artists and opposition groups.
