Deluzio Floats 2028 Primary Challenge to Fetterman

Sen. John Fetterman’s appearance in a Republican midterm convention video, in which he praised Republican Sen. Dave McCormick and pledged to work with President Donald Trump to defend the steel industry, has intensified scrutiny of his relationship with the Democratic Party. Fetterman has criticized Democratic colleagues, denounced what he called political extremism and socialism, and supported Trump and Republicans on issues including nominees, artificial intelligence policy and Iran-related votes, while remaining a strong supporter of Israel. He says he will not switch parties because he supports labor unions, LGBTQ rights and other Democratic priorities. Rep. Chris Deluzio said he might challenge Fetterman in Pennsylvania’s 2028 Democratic primary, citing concerns about Fetterman’s Senate attendance, constituent engagement and commitment to his duties. The potential challenge follows a Wall Street Journal report alleging that Fetterman skipped constituent meetings and legislative calls while prioritizing media appearances and other engagements; Fetterman called the report a hit piece based on disgruntled former staffers. Deluzio and other potential challengers have said their immediate priority is helping Democrats in the upcoming November midterm elections, while Fetterman’s popularity among Republicans reportedly exceeds his standing among Democrats.
