Sherrill Calls for Caldwell Resignation After Harassment Findings

New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill on Thursday evening gave Lt. Gov. Dale Caldwell until Friday to resign after a 61-page investigation by former Attorney General Chris Porrino found serious, repeated state policy violations. An anonymous ethics complaint in May prompted the probe. Sherrill said Caldwell failed to uphold his office and that "The Lieutenant Governor's resignation is necessary and in the best interest of New Jersey residents." She said the lapses persisted despite warnings and trainings. The report found Caldwell made a romantic advance toward a staffer's friend, then told the staffer "but you young women are looking for young sperm." The staffer took a timestamped photo of a nearby statue; a state trooper present did not recall the remark. Caldwell denied the sperm remark but admitted asking for the friend's number. The report also found he sought a promotion for a romantic partner without disclosing it and brought personal guests to ticketed events without approval or payment. Attorney Thomas Calcagni said they firmly disagree with the three findings and the evidence does not support them. Assembly Republican leader John DiMaio said Sherrill owes answers on what she knew about warnings and should hold a press conference. Caldwell, also secretary of state, can be removed only by resignation or two-thirds Senate impeachment.
