2026 Midterms Bring Historic Wins and Election Tensions
The 2026 midterms have featured candidates whose scandals and extreme views might once have ended political careers, reflecting a campaign climate in which controversy and defiance can be political assets and polarization has crowded out policy debate. The elections have also brought major representation milestones, with Keisha Lance Bottoms projected to become the first Black woman governor and Colorado’s Melat Kiros and other outspoken critics of Israel reported elected to the House. Israel, antisemitism and anti-Zionism have become points of tension among Jewish voters and within the Democratic Party; Michigan’s closely watched Senate contest between progressive Democrat Abdul El-Sayed and Republican Mike Rogers, as well as races in Maine and Kansas, have drawn national attention. In Westchester County, New York, polling-site scanner problems prompted the state attorney general to coordinate with election officials, while candidates urged voters to stay in line.
