Romanian Man Receives 15-Year Russian Spy Sentence

David Adrian Kercso, a Romanian citizen who grew up in England, is serving a 15-year sentence in Russia after being convicted of spying for Ukraine. His family says an online romance brought him to the region, while Kercso has claimed that authorities made him memorize a false confession and promised his release if he repeated it on camera. An investigation found that an FSB video presented as showing his arrest was filmed months after he was already in custody; separatists in Abkhazia had released footage of him in custody earlier. Human rights advocates have criticized the case, citing allegations of torture and a coerced confession.
