Marco Rubio spoke at a press briefing during the G20 foreign ministers meeting in Atlanta on Oct. 31, 2026. He said the United States is trying to find out whether negotiated peace in Ukraine is achievable and that no one claims a settlement is at hand. He said the war will end only diplomatically, that both sides must make concessions at the table, and that the U.S. is happy to mediate. European officials cited by RFE/RL's Alex Raufoglu said Rubio does not believe Putin will agree to a settlement before spring 2027. On Oct. 22 Rubio framed the war as about Donbas land Russia wants and cannot take militarily. Zelensky has said Russia occupies 19.3 percent of Ukraine and will freeze the front without legal recognition of occupied territory. Contested: Rubio states a deal is not imminent and may not be achievable; the White House has invited Putin to the Dec. 14-15 Miami G20, and Rubio said any Zelensky invite is Trump's decision, which he would not rule out if useful, with no announcement made. Trump was asked about inviting Zelensky at Mar-a-Lago Halloween events. Next is the expected Trump-Putin-Xi meeting at APEC in Shenzhen on Nov. 18-19.

“Rubio Says Ukraine Peace Deal Not Imminent”This sounds like the U.S. is finally being honest that Ukraine can't force a quick win on the battlefield.
It's smart to keep talking with Russia anyway, since cutting off contact won't end the fighting any sooner.
