Scientists Crack Code on Welsh Shipwreck Lock
Researchers from Cardiff University and Amgueddfa Cymru used non-invasive micro-CT scans to reveal the four-letter combination, ANCE, on a brass lock recovered from the 1583 wreck of the Ann Francis off South Wales. Three-dimensional images showed how the lock’s internal notches aligned with its letter dials, and museum staff confirmed the code opened it. The lock may have secured a captain’s chest containing valuables or documents; the shipwreck’s finds include coins and other personal and maritime objects recovered over decades from Margam Beach. Researchers said applying imaging technology usually used to study biological structures allowed them to investigate the centuries-old artifact without damaging it.
