Spain Seas Set Summer Temperature Records
Global sea surface temperatures reached daily record highs for 100 consecutive days, with the average about 1 degree Celsius above the 1982–2010 average, according to Climate Central analysis of NOAA data. Researchers attributed the heat to human-caused global warming and a developing El Niño, warning that persistent marine heat could cause coral bleaching, fish die-offs and more intense storms and flooding. Spain experienced especially severe conditions in 2026, as nearly all monitored buoys in the Levante-Balear Mediterranean basin set local records and the Dragonera buoy reached 33.02°C on August 5. Record temperatures were also recorded off Tarragona, Barcelona and Spain’s northern Atlantic coast, while the country endured a record 61 days of land-based heatwave conditions. Scientists say climate change is the primary driver of Europe’s marine temperature extremes, posing growing risks to biodiversity, coastal communities and livelihoods.
