Saffie Osborne Makes History in St Leger Win
Saffie Osborne made history by becoming the first female jockey to win one of Britain’s five Flat-racing Classics, guiding 11-1 outsider Highwayman to victory in the 250th St Leger at Doncaster. Highwayman powered clear in the closing stages to beat stablemate Enceladus by roughly three lengths, giving trainer Joseph O’Brien a one-two finish. Amelia Earhart finished third for Aidan O’Brien, while heavily backed 7-4 favorite Christmas Day faded to ninth. Osborne, who was not assured of a ride until the week of the race, credited O’Brien, her agent and her family for the opportunity and said the victory had changed her life.
