Athlete Dies During Madison Ironman 70.3 Swim

A 51-year-old man died after experiencing a medical emergency during the swim portion of the IRONMAN 70.3 Wisconsin race in Madison on Sept. 12. Emergency crews were called to Lake Monona around 7:47 a.m.; UW Lake Rescue brought him to shore, where rescuers and a private emergency-services team performed lifesaving measures before he was taken to a hospital. The 70.3-mile event consists of a 1.2-mile swim, a 56-mile bike ride and a 13.1-mile run. IRONMAN officials expressed condolences but said they would not provide further details out of respect for the athlete’s family.
