Infantino plans Japan trip seeking FIFA reelection backing
The Asian Football Confederation has reversed its criticism of Gianni Infantino and endorsed his bid for a fourth and final term as FIFA president. AFC president Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa said the sides had resolved their disagreements, which followed Infantino’s abandoned plan to involve private investors in a venture holding commercial rights linked to FIFA tournaments, including the World Cup; Infantino apologized for mistakes in handling the proposal. Support from the AFC, Africa and other regions strengthens Infantino’s reelection prospects, while UEFA remains opposed and is seeking answers from FIFA about his leadership. The election is scheduled for March, nominations close November 18, and no challenger has emerged.
