Mets World Series Hero Koosman Dies at 83
Jerry Koosman, the All-Star left-hander and key member of the 1969 “Miracle Mets,” has died at 83. The Mets said he died Sunday in Wisconsin, surrounded by family, after battling multiple illnesses. Koosman spent 12 seasons with New York and won both his starts in the 1969 World Series, including the deciding Game 5; he also helped the Mets reach the 1973 Series. Across 19 major-league seasons, he went 222-209 with a 3.36 ERA and 2,556 strikeouts. The Mets retired his No. 36 in 2021, and he remains the franchise’s winningest left-handed pitcher.
