Sports Helped Nation Heal After 9/11
The 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks has prompted reflection not only on the nearly 3,000 lives lost but also on how Americans began rebuilding a sense of normalcy. Sports played a distinctive role in that recovery: Indiana high school football resumed just days after the attacks, while professional and collegiate seasons paused as the country mourned. The tragedy exposed sports’ paradoxical role as both seemingly inconsequential entertainment and a powerful force for community, continuity and shared identity. For Americans born in 2001, the post-9/11 security measures, changed sporting rituals and national anxieties are not memories but the only world they have known.
