Suspect Faces Federal Charges in DC Guard Shooting

Jerrell Lamont Jackson, 41, has been charged federally with firearm offenses and assault with a dangerous weapon after allegedly shooting a Georgia National Guard member who tried to intervene in a fight in Southeast Washington. Authorities say Jackson fired while fleeing and exchanged gunfire with Guard members, who wounded him; both he and the injured guardsman were treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Investigators recovered a 9mm pistol and shell casings, and officials say Jackson has a lengthy criminal record. The shooting occurred during the National Guard deployment ordered by President Donald Trump, which the administration credits with reducing crime while critics in Washington have challenged its effectiveness and legality.
