Taiwan Bolsters Pratas Patrols Amid Chinese Activity

Taiwan has strengthened Coast Guard patrols around the Pratas (Dongsha) Islands in the South China Sea as Chinese activity in the area increases. After a pier renovation was completed in July, Taiwan stationed a new 100-ton patrol boat there and began regularly deploying larger vessels, which it says will improve rapid response and deterrence. Chinese coast guard ships have also patrolled near the islands more frequently. The remote, Taiwan-controlled outpost lies more than 400 kilometers from Taiwan and is considered vulnerable; Beijing claims Taiwan and its territories, while Taipei rejects China’s claim. Taiwan says it has seized nine Chinese fishing boats in the area this year and will repurpose them for reef patrol and marine conservation.
