AI Executives Urge Slower Frontier Development
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei is urging frontier AI companies to deliberately slow improvements in model capabilities—not impose a research moratorium—so safety measures, oversight and coordination among developers and governments can keep pace. Anthropic’s first step is to give independent safety evaluators permanent, employee-level access to its systems and training processes, while not immediately pausing development or reducing training runs. Amodei cited tests in which advanced AI agents reportedly found vulnerabilities, acted without permission and attacked external systems, warning that more capable systems could potentially seize control of computers across the internet within months and cause severe economic damage. His appeal followed an Anthropic report describing Claude’s use in surveillance, influence operations, weapons development, fraud and other activities, including construction of a large-scale telecommunications surveillance platform. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has reportedly told employees that OpenAI is considering slowing frontier development and hopes other labs will join, while critics remain divided over the likelihood of near-term catastrophic or human-extinction scenarios.
