Three arrested after newborn found alive in Savannah trash can

A newborn was found alive in a trash can near the Quality Inn in the 7100 block of Abercorn Street in Savannah around 2:45 a.m. on Oct. 10, 2026. Chatham EMS responded to a hemorrhaging patient, determined at the hospital the patient had recently given birth, and alerted police. Sgt. Howard Crosby and Officer Richard Taylor found the infant nearby. The baby received care at Memorial Health and was placed with Georgia DFCS. Dominique Welcome, 29, arrested at Memorial Hospital, and Jamal West, 44, arrested at the hotel, face cruelty-to-children charges. Chiquita Roche, 39, arrested at the hotel, faces party-to-a-crime and willful obstruction charges. Police reminded the public of Georgia's Safe Place for Newborns Act. Michael Bossak of Children's Hospital of Savannah said mothers can drop off a child guilt-free so the baby can survive. HypeFresh cites HB 350 (effective July 1, 2026) raising the limit to 45 days; KWTX describe it as 30 days. The three remain charged; the infant remains in DFCS care.
