U.S. Sanctions Rwanda Ministry Over Alleged M23 Support
The United States imposed sanctions on Rwanda’s Ministry of Defence and Zigama Credit and Savings Society, accusing them of supporting M23 rebels in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. U.S. officials say Rwanda deployed troops and provided the group with equipment, training and logistical support, helping it seize territory and worsening the conflict’s humanitarian toll. The measures escalate Washington’s pressure on Kigali as fighting continues despite peace agreements and mediation efforts that have had little effect on the ground. Rwanda denies backing M23 and has blamed other armed groups for fueling the violence.
