Wake Forest routs Merrimack 77-0

No. 16 Wake Forest routed Merrimack 77-0, taking a 49-0 halftime lead and improving to 8-1. With injured starter Gio Lopez held out, Steele Pizzella made his first career start and accounted for 495 yards and four touchdowns, completing 23 of 28 passes for 432 yards and three scores while adding a rushing touchdown. Wake Forest also scored on a 79-yard punt return and a 98-yard interception return, while Merrimack managed only 202 yards and turned the ball over twice. Coach Jake Dickert praised Pizzella’s command of the offense but said the team must clean up penalties, particularly on special teams. The Demon Deacons now turn to a challenging road game against SMU as they pursue a place in the ACC championship game.
