Rare Tornado Strikes Santa Fe Homes as New Mexico Floods Recede
An EF-1 tornado with winds reaching 110 mph struck Santa Fe Saturday night, traveling about a mile and a half and damaging at least eight to 10 homes, trees, vehicles and power infrastructure; some homes were left uninhabitable, but no injuries were reported. Residents faced disruptions to electricity, water and gas as crews and neighbors began repairs and cleanup, and residents praised the community’s mutual aid. The tornado was exceptionally rare for Santa Fe, where the previous confirmed tornado was reported decades ago. Separately, flooding in San Juan County and nearby areas led to evacuations and recovery work; river levels are receding, no new rescues have been reported, and evacuated areas remain closed during safety searches. McGee Park continues to shelter displaced residents, public water systems are operating, private wells may need testing for contamination, and power restoration could take several days in affected areas.
