West Hartford Owners Sue Over Airbnb Zoning Ruling
West Hartford’s Zoning Board of Appeals unanimously rejected Lisa and Alexander Khan’s challenge to a town order barring short-term rentals at their Pheasant Hill Drive home, concluding that its use violated residential zoning rules and that the zoning officer’s interpretation was consistent with past practice. The town says short-term rentals amount to commercial, hotel-like uses not permitted in residential zones; the Khans argue the regulations do not set a minimum rental period or prohibit renting an entire home to one family at a time. The Khans have sued in Superior Court, asking a judge to overturn the board’s decision and allow the rental to continue. Nearby residents say the Airbnb has brought parties, traffic and late-night disturbances, while Khan says guests often visit for weddings and anniversaries.
