DR Congo Ebola Outbreak Becomes Deadliest

DR Congo’s Ebola outbreak is the deadliest in the country’s history, with about 2,325 deaths among 4,945 confirmed cases as of mid-August, surpassing the 2018-2020 toll. The case fatality ratio is roughly 46-47%, driven by late detection and overwhelmed health services, not increased virulence. The Bundibugyo strain remains without approved vaccines or treatments, complicating containment. The outbreak has spread to six provinces, including Ituri and North Kivu, amid ongoing conflict, weak health infrastructure, community distrust, and health-worker strikes. The UN and WHO have declared it a Public Health Emergency of International Concern and are scaling up funding, logistics, burials, testing, and treatment capacity.
