Fort Hood Honors Huey and Olmstead After Crash

Communities across the United States honored military service members and veterans through ceremonies, memorial projects and personal tributes. Vietnam veteran Ernest Perham, whose Army service included two tours in Vietnam, received a handmade Quilt of Valor recognizing his combat service and decades of helping fellow veterans, while Arkansas veterans Seth Keown and Gary Humphrey also received the quilts. Six of the nation’s 65 living Medal of Honor recipients gathered at Fort Bragg for a Valor Tour ceremony that included the reenlistment oath for more than 80 soldiers. In Indiana, a local DAR chapter honored 11 Bartholomew County soldiers who were prisoners of war or missing in action during World War II with a downtown window walk and banners. In Texas, family, friends and fellow soldiers held a church service and full military funeral honors for Chief Warrant Officer Two Deontre Huey, who was killed with Warrant Officer Seth Olmstead in an Apache helicopter crash that remains under investigation.

9/11 fund still gets 750 monthly claims as illness deaths surpass attack toll

As the 25th anniversary of 9/11 nears, the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund continues to receive about 750 new claims per month (roughly 25 per day) from people affected by the attacks and their families, with more than 112,000 claims filed and about 77,000 claims paid totaling around $18.6 billion; the fund is expected to keep operating through 2090. Officials emphasize that eligibility isn’t limited to first responders but extends to anyone within the NYC exposure zone who lived, worked, studied, or visited the area, and they are ramping up outreach as the toll of 9/11-related illnesses and deaths surpasses 6,000.
