Anak Krakatau Eruption Disrupts 209 Flights

Mount Anak Krakatau erupted in Indonesia on Sept. 6 after increased activity since late Sept. 4, sending ash plumes as high as 50,000 feet across western Indonesia and temporarily suspending operations at Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport. At least 209 flights and approximately 22,800 passengers were affected, with Singapore Airlines, Batik Air and other carriers canceling or delaying services; disruptions also affected flights in Makassar and routes linking Lombok and Jakarta. The airport closure was extended as authorities monitored shifting ash clouds. Schools and fishing activities were halted in affected areas, and officials advised residents to wear masks and eye protection, limit outdoor exposure, protect water supplies and avoid the crater. No casualties, evacuations, significant damage or imminent tsunami threat were reported.
