Flight 93 Tributes Mark 25th Anniversary

As the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks approaches, Flight 93’s 40 passengers and crew are being honored through ceremonies and artistic tributes at the Pennsylvania Capitol and the Flight 93 National Memorial near Shanksville. A large memorial flag listing all 40 names was unfurled in Harrisburg before returning to Shanksville, with proceeds from its sale benefiting the local volunteer fire company. The memorial’s events also include chalk portraits of the 40 victims, created by artists from around the country to commemorate the passengers and crew who resisted the hijackers and prevented the plane from reaching its intended target. The memorial site continues to invite reflection on the crash and the enduring significance of the victims’ actions, while a historical account notes that presidents and first ladies have visited the site since the first official presidential visit in 2002.
