80-year-old Scottsdale man accused of shooting salesman who asked for water

An 80-year-old Scottsdale, Arizona, man, Patrick McBride, was arrested after allegedly shooting a door-to-door window-washing salesman during a confrontation in a gated community. The salesman had stopped at McBride’s home to ask for water and later remained nearby while looking for a wallet he believed he had lost. Police and court records say McBride, who was armed with a handgun, confronted the man again after deciding to ensure he had left the neighborhood; the salesman was shot in the back or lower back while riding an electric Segway. The victim was hospitalized in stable condition with a spinal injury and reportedly cannot feel his legs. McBride told investigators the gun fired accidentally during an encounter in which he feared the salesman was approaching him with a cellphone, but the circumstances remain disputed. He faces charges including aggravated assault causing serious physical injury and disorderly conduct involving a weapon.
