A late-night discovery on the streets of Miami turned into a life-saving moment, thanks to a man who had little more than a bench to call his own.

According to the New York Post, Arnett Johnson, who has been living in the Allapattah neighborhood since his release from prison six months ago, spotted something unusual just before midnight Wednesday — a young boy wandering alone.

Johnson said he immediately sensed something was wrong.

“God sent me there. I had to do what God say to do,” he told Local10.

Before taking action, he checked the surrounding area to see if a parent or guardian might be nearby. When no one appeared, he realized the child was truly alone.

Johnson then called the police and stayed with the 6-year-old, keeping him safe until officers arrived.

“It’s dangerous every day out here, right here. Especially, we got homeless people all together, and you’ve got fixed minds — it’s dangerous,” he said.

Officers later credited Johnson with potentially preventing a far worse outcome.

Should public attention be focused on homeless individuals who aid others?

“You know, kudos to him. We don’t know what would have happened if he would have remained on the streets,” Miami police Officer Mike Vega said.

Once in police care, the boy made a brief statement: “Mommy drop me off and left me.”

Authorities said the child had delayed speech, which made it difficult to determine his identity or locate his family immediately.

The breakthrough came the following day when a school resource officer recognized the child from a “need to identify” alert and notified police.

Investigators were then able to identify the boy and track down his mother, Annie Rivera. A witness told authorities that Rivera and her son had been staying with them, but both were missing late Wednesday night. Rivera returned early Thursday morning, but the child was not with her.

Police later took Rivera into custody. She faces a charge of child neglect without bodily harm.

The boy was placed into the care of the Florida Department of Children and Families.

As the investigation continues, officers say Johnson’s quick thinking made all the difference in ensuring the child’s safety.
