Jim Jordan Loses Bid to Be House Speaker on First Ballot

WASHINGTON, DC - OCTOBER 17: U.S. Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) listens to nomination speeches for Speaker of the House as the House of Representatives prepares to vote on a new Speaker at the U.S. Capitol Building on October 17, 2023 in Washington, DC. The House has been without an elected leader since Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) was ousted from the speakership on October 4 in a move led by a small group of conservative members of his own party. House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) has lost his bid to be the next speaker.

On Tuesday, the House held its first round of voting for Jordan’s bid to win the speaker’s gavel, and he did not win enough votes.

Twenty Republicans voted against Jordan.

Fox News’ Chad Pergram notes House will have to hold another round of voting on whether to make Jordan speaker.

The vote comes two weeks after eight Republicans joined every Democrat in the chamber to vote to oust then-House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.)

House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) was nominated to be the new speaker last week but withdrew from consideration as it became clear he would not have enough votes to become speaker.
