Pope Leo XIV is recovering after surgery at Rome’s Gemelli hospital to remove the lower lobe of his right lung, where doctors confirmed pulmonary adenocarcinoma, a common form of lung cancer. The Vatican said his recovery was proceeding as expected and that he was walking and eating soon after the operation, while doctors noted that regaining breathing capacity could take months and that preventing pneumonia was important. Leo thanked Catholics for their prayers, and religious and political leaders sent messages of support; public engagements have been canceled through Oct. 20. President Donald Trump also wished the pope well and said the reported prognosis appeared good.
