House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) does not plan to seek the position of House minority leader after Republicans lost control of the House.
The Republican lawmaker told his staff of his decision during a call on Wednesday, according to people familiar with the discussion, Fox News reports.
Who will run for the position? House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) is throwing his name into the ring, according to the outlet. Jordan ran for House speaker in October 2023.
It is reported that House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-Fla.) could challenge Jordan.
Democrats clinched control of the Senate and House.
President Donald Trump told The New York Times on Tuesday night that he was "absolutely willing" to accept the midterm election results.
"We'll, you know, look forward to working with them," Trump said of Democrats, ahead of Democrats taking control of the House and Senate. "We'll probably work something out."
Democrats are on track to have the largest majority in the House since 2008, according to The New York Times.
In the Senate, Democrats are holding the largest majority for their party since 2014.
