A left-wing streamer who Democrats are flocking to for the 2026 midterm elections bemoaned the fall of the Soviet Union during a debate at Yale on Tuesday.
Controversial Twitch streamer Hasan Piker has become an influential figure on the left, with a growing role in midterm politics and potential sway over the 2028 presidential race, according to Politico. During the debate, Piker lamented that the collapse of the Soviet Union led to the United States creating “disaster after disaster after disaster.”
“I was interviewed by a media outlet where I said, we defeated the USSR, and the USSR dissolved, unfortunately,” Piker said. “This was quite the controversial statement at the time. Fox News still loves repeating this soundbite. And some Democrats also channel that frustration as well.”

“They say, how dare you, Hasan? The USSR was our enemy. They were ruthless, authoritarian,” Piker continued. “The fall of the USSR was one of the greatest catastrophes of the 20th century. Just wait, listen, maybe you’ll agree. Not only was there incalculable harm done to every single country under its banner. Child prostitution, skyrocketing suicide rates, life expectancy plummeting. But America was no longer contested around the globe.”
Over 100 million people died at the hands of communist regimes, led by the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, which was established in 1917 after the Bolshevik Revolution overthrew the Russian monarchy, according to the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation.
“It is precisely because of the end to that multipolarity that we saw accelerated neoliberalism that is devastating every Western nation right now, unlimited and unchecked greed,” Piker said. “Our successes are leading to our own demise and the demise in collapse of the liberal system. The U.S. has produced disaster after disaster after disaster after disaster.”
In November, Piker previously expressed regret that the United States won the Cold War while on a livestream from Democratic New York Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani’s election-night rally. In another November stream that was live from China, Piker said he had “become full Chinese.”
“I have already become Chinese. In my heart, in my soul, in my mind, in my conscience, I have already become Chinese, okay?” Piker proclaimed. “We were already white Chinese in this chat, I have become full Chinese.”
