Communities Mark 25th Anniversary, Survivors Recall 9/11

On the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, communities in Canada, the United States and elsewhere honored the nearly 3,000 people killed, survivors and first responders while emphasizing the enduring bond between Canada and the United States. Accounts from witnesses and responders recalled the confusion, fear and trauma of the day, as well as the years of emotional and physical consequences that followed. Several stories also highlighted children born amid the crisis, including Aidan Kask, whose pregnant mother escaped the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel during the attacks and went into labor after reaching a hospital. In Montana, Lisa Day likewise gave birth to her only son, Michael, on the night of Sept. 11 after going into labor while watching the attacks unfold. For these families, birthdays and new life remain inseparably linked to a day of national tragedy, producing grief and hope in equal measure.
