Fatal Ebola case detected in new DRC province, officials say

A fatal Ebola case has been detected in South-Ubangi, a northwestern province of the Democratic Republic of Congo bordering the Central African Republic and Congo-Brazzaville, raising concerns about cross-border spread. The patient traveled through multiple provinces and neighboring countries before arriving in South-Ubangi, and authorities fear exposure along road and river routes; local transmission there has not yet been confirmed. The Bundibugyo-virus outbreak, Congo’s 17th, has reached six other provinces and has caused 6,942 reported cases and 3,349 deaths, making it the country’s deadliest and largest outbreak by case count. Health officials are tracing and quarantining contacts as the World Health Organization warns the outbreak remains out of control and could surpass the 2014–2016 West African Ebola epidemic.
