Anthropic has agreed to spend $3.4 billion to take over commitments for 1.7 gigawatts of heavy-duty gas-fired generators that San Antonio-based OnePWR Solutions had ordered from Caterpillar, along with engineering and construction capabilities for installation. The deal is described as the largest known single purchase of power-generation equipment by an AI lab; Anthropic is not acquiring OnePWR or its employees. The move reflects the difficulty of securing equipment and power for rapidly expanding AI data centers, and Anthropic has disclosed that some planned facilities will rely on on-site natural-gas generation, leaving it exposed to fuel-price volatility and supply disruptions. The deal also highlights growing demand for Caterpillar’s power-generation business, whose sales have risen as data-center projects drive orders for engines and turbines.
