US AI safety center reportedly shifts reporting to White House office
The Commerce Department’s AI safety center, CAISSI, has reportedly been asked to report informally to a White House office as it operates without a permanent director and has stopped publicly releasing research on AI safety tests. Critics warn that closer White House oversight could politicize evaluations of powerful AI systems and weaken independent scrutiny of risks such as cyberattacks and bioweapons. Supporters say the arrangement could raise the center’s profile and potentially lead to more funding; it currently receives $10 million annually.
